Zug, March 17, 2025 – The starting signal for a network of decentralized data centers in Central Europe has been given: HOCHTIEF, a technology-driven global provider of infrastructure solutions, and Thomas-Krenn, a specialist in server solutions, have joined forces in the Yorizon joint venture. Yorizon is collaborating with VNC, a pioneer in digitally sovereign software, and BYTESATWORK, a provider of cloud portals. With their comprehensive Giga-Cloud, the partners are setting new standards in connectivity, security, and sustainability.

Yorizon is a provider of sustainable cloud computing and green IT solutions, building a growing network of edge data centers across Europe. Based in Berlin and Vienna, the company was founded as a joint venture startup between HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions and Thomas-Krenn AG.

Yorizon markets the YEXIO data centers, a HOCHTIEF product that features timber construction, energy independence, and innovative water cooling. The design of the data centers follows a decentralized and sustainable approach. They are compact, robust, and flexible network modules with capacities between 2 and 4 megawatts, designed for maximum availability and data security. Rural areas are deliberately chosen as locations to strengthen the local economy and shorten data paths. The data centers are equipped with high-performance servers, storage systems, and network technologies from Thomas-Krenn. Thanks to their timber construction, energy efficiency through renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, and innovative water cooling, they meet high sustainability standards: up to 85 percent of waste heat can be reused.

Complete cloud stack for Central European needs
On top of this networked infrastructure hardware, VNC’s platform and software services come into play. The modular, highly integrated, and open source based collaboration and communication solution VNClagoon is standard in YEXIO data centers. Digital sovereignty is ensured by top-level security with end-to-end encryption and strict data protection standards, a modular design for individual customization, application integration and cost- effective deployment.

Functional modules include VNCtalk for secure real-time communication with chat, video calls, and screen sharing; VNCmail as a powerful email solution with calendar and contact management; VNCproject for project and task management; and VNCsafe for encrypted file sharing and storage. The VNCdirectory service manages centralized user, access, and rights administration.
Additionally, VNC offers managed services on Yorizon, such as the PostgreSQL database solution, the Apache Solr Cloud fast-search technology, or the eArchive4Future, a vault-compliant archiving system for secure and legally compliant data retention. VNClagoon can also serve as a horizontal AI platform for interchangeable Large Language Models (LLMs) to support local AI application development.

PRESS RELEASE

Zug, December 16, 2024 – VNC, a leading developer of open-source-based enterprise applications, and Intel are bringing generative AI to personal computers. The combination of Intel’s next-generation processors, the Intel OpenVINO toolkit, and the secure VNClagoon platform enables the confidential use of large language models (LLMs) on local PCs or notebooks – independent of proprietary AI vendor platforms..

One of the biggest challenges in using GenAI is ensuring the security and confidentiality of data. Language models are typically hosted on proprietary cloud platforms provided by AI vendors, where data is processed and often used to further train their models. For security-critical applications, such as those in critical infrastructure, this is unacceptable. Similarly, data-sensitive organizations and enterprises need alternative solutions to use GenAI productively and securely while maintaining full control over their data.

From the data center to your computer

Previously, with toolkits like Intel OpenVINO, LLMs could be deployed in an organization’s data center to run at high performance – a significant step toward greater data sovereignty in GenAI usage. However, these models were too large and resource-intensive for desktop PCs and notebooks. Now, by combining VNClagoon and OpenVINO with Intel’s powerful new Lunar Lake architecture, LLMs can be significantly compressed and run locally on Intel-powered devices in a secure sandbox environment. This means all data, documents, and models remain offline, with AI queries executed locally, ensuring complete privacy.

Secure AI on the move

This advancement opens up entirely new possibilities for mobile GenAI applications, such as securely processing confidential data in the field. Local AI is finally becoming a reality, providing a practical implementation of Confidential AI. This guarantees independence from unauthorized access through offline functionality without compromising performance. It enables specific data and lightweight models to be used in secure local environments for applications such as aid organizations, police, or military operations. It also simplifies compliance with security regulations, including the EU’s AI Act.

“As indispensable as AI has become, the legitimate security concerns surrounding critical applications have been just as serious,” said Andrea Wörrlein, Managing Director of VNC in Berlin and Member of the Board of VNC AG in Zug. “But Local AI is now the breakthrough because it makes the use of AI independent of proprietary, data-sensitive platforms. This secures users’ data sovereignty. Trusted AI is finally becoming a reality.”

OPINION PIECE

The mystification of artificial intelligence sometimes leads to strange results. But it is neither the engine of a brave new world nor an apocalyptic threat. It is simply a new, albeit sophisticated, technology that we must all learn to use wisely. And that is our responsibility.

Any new technology is neither good nor bad in itself. It is the way we use it that gives it that dimension. Artificial intelligence is the same. In this respect, it is no different from other breakthroughs such as the taming of fire or the harnessing of atomic energy. Like those other breakthroughs, AI opens up previously unimagined possibilities – and, by extension, presents us with unprecedented challenges. Whether they are technical, economic, legal, political, moral, or ethical, we will often have to start from scratch. This is something we have to deal with. And this in the face of an almost maddening pace of development.

Unfortunately, the concept of technology assessment and its application have been forgotten. A first step would be, for example, to introduce AI as a compulsory subject in the curriculum. In addition to teaching the basic functions of analytical, predictive, and generative AI, the curriculum should include specific instructions on how to use it responsibly. This applies not only to schools, but to all of us. After all, no one can absolve us of the duty to critically engage with such an elementary cultural competency and develop the skills to do so.

Own data versus proprietary systems
AI is primarily about two elementary things: data and models. The core of generative AI systems are language models or Large Language Models (LLMs). However, these are usually bound to proprietary structures. ChatGPT, for example, is only accessible via the Azure platform. The reasoning behind this is clear: the data automatically ends up with the platform operator and can be used, analyzed, and reused for continuous fine-tuning of the LLMs. This creates dependencies. Proprietary platforms should therefore be avoided from the outset to prevent data leakage and uncontrolled use.

Alternatively, you can download LLMs and use them on your own hardware. In this way, users and companies retain control of their intellectual property. However, this requires them to build up their own AI expertise and manage it in a structured way. We need to be very careful about which models we allow to use our own sensitive data. This applies to both personal and professional use. If confidential company information is processed on proprietary platforms, misuse is inevitable. Companies should therefore have a vested interest in training their employees in the use of data and models.

Personal responsibility vs. top-down regulation
However, it is important to protect ourselves from an illusion: the states, the governments and the authorities are not going to take this task off our hands and regulate everything for us. No one can protect us from the combination of sentiment analysis and public camera surveillance, for example, which is already common practice in China and some European countries, becoming a dangerous instrument of power in the hands of the state. We have to do it ourselves. Those who allow their own data sovereignty to be undermined have already lost. That’s why we need to actively and critically engage with AI and learn to use it as an exciting new tool. Once again, we are all faced with the question of whether to use a revolutionary technology creatively and productively for the benefit of humanity, or to allow it to dominate us.

Zug, October 30, 2024 – eArchive4Future is a new solution for archiving large amounts of data. It is being developed as part of a working group with the participation of representatives from leading technology companies such as Fujitsu, Intel, SUSE and VNC as well as the Bechtle IT system houses in Munich and Bonn. Public institutions such as the German Federal Employment Agency and the German Federal Archives are involved as reference implementations for the legally compliant long-term storage of large amounts of data.

The eArchive4Future archiving solution is the result of the collaboration between the four technology partners and the system houses. It is being developed in close cooperation with German authorities such as the Federal Employment Agency, the Federal Archives and the Federal Network Agency. The joint technology, management and security expertise results in a state-of-the-art, scalable and secure archiving solution that combines regulatory compliance with AI-powered capabilities for the provision, analysis and use of data. The system ensures the long-term availability and integrity of documents and complies with the highest German and EU security standards (including BSI-TR-ESOR, eIDAS and RFC4998).

Competence times five

The new archiving solution is highly scalable and will cover all three layers of data sovereignty and security: At the infrastructure level (IaaS), Intel hardware is used. Intel® Software Guard Extensions (SGX) and Trust Domain Extensions (TDX) technologies isolate and securely process data in cloud environments. Open source pioneer and platform specialist SUSE provides the operating system and Kubernetes layer for agile container technology and microservices management at the platform level (PaaS). At the software-as-a-service level (SaaS), VNCdirectory handles authorization and metadata management as well as integration with partner solutions for SecDocs and AI Analytics. These include Planet AI (majority owned by Bechtle) for intelligent document analysis (IDA), Fujitsu SecDocs for long-term storage of digital documents for the preservation of evidence, and Fujitsu PrivateGPT for implementing AI functionality in the company’s own data center. The open source-based Intel® OpenVINO™ Toolkit is used for local use of Large Language Models (LLMs).

VNClagoon as an integrating software stack

All these functionalities are integrated into the VNClagoon software suite and can be controlled intuitively at the front end. The result is a functionally complex yet easy-to-use archiving solution. Automated processes and AI-based functions for metadata creation and document categorization enable fast, accurate and secure access to all content. The use of AI makes it possible not only to archive huge amounts of data, but also to use it productively.

„All five partners in the eArchive4Future project represent the highest level of technological expertise and a commitment to security in handling all data and confidential computing,“ explains Andrea Wörrlein, Managing Director of VNC in Berlin and member of the Board of VNC AG in Zug. „This cooperation will result in a future-oriented solution that enables both secure long-term archiving and new usage options for archived data.“

“In view of the further implementation of the Online Access Act, I am pleased that with eArchive4Future we can offer federal authorities, states, municipalities and industry a holistic solution approach for a plug-and-play, evidence-preserving long-time archive,” emphasizes Bettina Philipp, Strategic Account Director Federal Employment Agency/Federal Archives at Fujitsu.

“With eArchive4Future, the complex and highly regulated archiving system is simplified and the use of AI enables significant efficiency gains,” says Marco Schilli, Head of Public Sector at Bechtle IT Systemhaus Munich.

„By using confidential computing technologies such as Intel’s Software Guard Extensions and Trust Domain Extensions on Intel® Xeon™ processors, we support the secure processing of sensitive data in public administration. In this way, we help to reconcile IT security requirements with flexible digitalization,“ explains Dr. Markus Leberecht, Principal Engineer at Intel Germany’s EMEA Chief Technology Office.

„When it comes to securely archiving large amounts of data, a secure, digitally sovereign and open solution is crucial for companies and public authorities to avoid becoming dependent,“ says Jens-Gero Boehm, Area Vice President Channel Sales DACH at SUSE. „As a provider of secure and open business solutions, we are very proud that, together with our technology partners Bechtle, Fujitsu, Intel and VNC, we can make an important contribution to legal certainty and digital sovereignty with this archiving solution that meets the highest German and EU security guidelines.“

Zug, Switzerland, July 23, 2024 – Artificial intelligence is often described as a latent threat to corporate data sovereignty. If you don’t want to expose yourself to this threat, you need to develop strategies and tactics for using AI securely and productively. VNC explains the most important parameters of Confidential AI.

Artificial intelligence and confidential computing are in a seemingly irresolvable tension: on the one hand, AI poses a latent threat to confidential computing, but on the other hand, it can help in its implementation. The magic word for resolving this contradiction is Confidential AI. It describes a concept for dealing with AI that identifies the major uncertainty factors and makes them manageable. Data and data sovereignty come first. In addition, AI can be used in a targeted and secure manner to optimize collaboration and communication applications. VNC, a leading developer of open source-based enterprise applications, explains the key elements:

  1. Decentralized LLMs: Large Language Models (LLMs) typically run on the vendors’ proprietary hyperscaler platforms. What happens to the data there is unknown. Therefore, it makes sense to download the LLMs to your own platforms using appropriate toolkits (such as Intel OpenVINO). This way, both the data and the applications remain in your own data center and are protected from unauthorized access.
  2. Local AI for application optimization: Stripped-down models of these LLMs can be integrated directly into applications in dedicated software stacks. AI functions such as intelligent assistants can be integrated directly and transparently at any time. They are also potentially available to all applications in the same form across modules via modular platforms.
  3. Train models using local knowledge base: LLMs are usually trained with large amounts of data. By using LLMs locally, they can also be trained and optimized quickly, specifically and practically by querying the company’s own database. This also makes them transparent and auditable at any time.
  4. Acceleration through indexing: In addition, access to the local knowledge base can be accelerated by indexing the databases. Queries are no longer made against the entire database, but only against the indexes. This increases speed, availability and accuracy – and therefore productivity.
  5. Open source: Open source is the natural enemy of proprietary systems. In order to avoid vendor lock-in, not only should chronically non-transparent vendor-specific AI platforms (PaaS) be avoided for confidential computing, but open source should also be the first choice for AI applications at the software level (SaaS).

“Confidential AI gives companies and users back the sovereignty over their own data and applications,” emphasizes Andrea Wörrlein, Managing Director of VNC in Berlin and Member of the Board of VNC AG in Zug. “Artificial intelligence can thus be used in a secure, targeted, independent and practical way to increase productivity and job satisfaction.”

Zug, Switzerland, 10 July 2024 – With the VNCphone, VNC presents a unique combination of mobile phone, hardened operating system and pre-installed applications for secure mobile communication and collaboration.

With VNCphone, VNC, a leading developer of open source-based enterprise applications, now enables professional mobile working without spying and illegal data eavesdropping – from the hardware, operating systems and platforms to the application modules at the application level. Currently, the market is still dominated by vendors and solutions that are questionable from a security perspective, as sensitive data is transmitted to anonymous recipients in an unsolicited and non-transparent manner each time it is used.

With VNCphone a secure alternative is now available. VNC has created its own integrated system. It extends end-to-end from the device hardware to the independence from proprietary clouds on the platform level, the VNClagoon OS as a Google-free Android operating system and optional VPN to the pre-installed VNClagoon applications. The hardware basis of this solution is the Volla Phone, manufactured in Germany. Among other things, it is dual-boot capable, so that the user can choose between VNClagoon OS, Ubuntu Touch, a Linux-based operating system, or a normal Google Android. It is therefore perfectly suited for COPE scenarios (Corporate Owned – Personally Enabled), where devices provided by the company can also be used privately. The modular software stack VNClagoon is already preinstalled on the VNCphone. Applications like VNCtalk, VNCmail, VNCproject or VNCtask can be activated via subscription on the VNC website and can be used immediately for mobile collaboration.

“With VNCphone, there is finally a completely secure package for professional mobile communication and collaboration,” says Andrea Wörrlein, managing director of VNC in Berlin and member of the board of VNC AG in Zug. “It is ideally suited for use in security-relevant environments such as in public and government institutions, in critical infrastructures or in companies that are sensitive to security issues.”

Zug, May 8, 2024 – Secure, AI-powered communication and collaboration for everyone, without exposing data to the big AI players. This is the motto of VNC, the leading developer of open source-based enterprise applications, at Intel Vision EMEA 2024.

As a Bronze Sponsor of Intel Vision EMEA 2024, taking place May 14-15 in London, VNC will showcase the latest AI-enabled version of its modular software suite, VNClagoon. Among the highlights are the new AI assistants with their generative AI functions, which are directly integrated into the various applications. As they are deeply embedded in the software stack, they are available across modules in the various VNClagoon applications such as VNCproject, VNCsocial, VNCchannels or VNCtalk (chat and video conferencing) and can be used there for supporting services in communication and collaboration.

The generative AI systems are accessed directly from the applications and the corresponding large language models (LLMs) are not used on the service platforms of the AI providers. Instead, VNClagoon uses the Intel distribution of the open source toolkit OpenVINO to execute the LLMs locally on the PC. This protects both the VNClagoon applications and the data used and processed in the LLMs from unauthorized access of any kind. In addition, the new Intel AI PCs with Meteor Lake “Core Ultra 9” processors offer the right performance for new AI-based applications such as enterprise knowledge management or robot assistants to support daily work.

“The combination of VNClagoon and Intel opens up completely new possibilities for the secure use of generative AI in collaboration and communication,” explains Andrea Wörrlein, Managing Director of VNC in Berlin and Member of the Board of VNC AG in Zug. “Intelligent search functions and automated assistants that run locally on the user’s PC not only make work easier, but also protect users from having their data tapped, thus contributing to the democratization of generative AI.”

AI assistants like Vincenta AI also help streamline meetings ...

... as well as planning the work day.

VNC AG and BedRock Systems, Inc. are pleased to announce they have entered into a global strategic partnership, combining BedRock’s groundbreaking runtime security layer with the VNClagoon communication and collaboration suite to enhance Data Sovereignty in commercial cloud environments.

Zug, Switzerland & San Francisco, CA – April 2, 2024 – VNC AG and BedRock Systems, Inc. are pleased to announce they have entered into a global strategic partnership, combining BedRock ULTRA, a groundbreaking cloud runtime security layer, with the VNClagoon™ communication and collaboration suite to enhance Data Sovereignty in the commercial cloud environment.

In VNC’s Zero Trust Onion principle, ‘Level 7’ refers to Container Host OS protection, critical to assuring workload isolation and run-time integrity. This new level of protection is now possible for VNClagoon customers through the integration of BedRock’s foundational run-time security layer.

VNC’s world class enterprise office productivity tools combined with the BedRock run-time security layer provide a trusted foundation that mitigates a broad spectrum of heretofore unprotected cyber-attack vectors, addressing the requirement for enhanced Data Sovereignty: that data is retained and protected within sanctioned geographic boundaries and that bad actors are thwarted from exploiting the lowest layers of the IT stack to gain access to private data. This run-time security layer provides real-time out-of-band continuous protection which stops attacks that have been shown to thwart conventional security controls.

The partnership provides customers safe and secure access to VNC’s cloud-based productivity tools and assurance that their data is protected, maintained and controlled within established boundaries, preventing data from being moved around the world or from being “inspected” by others. Leveraging Bedrock Systems’ foundational run-time security layer, VNClagoon threat prevention mechanisms are uniquely able to defend against attacks that threaten the integrity of container and Linux workloads, preventing damage from unpatched vulnerabilities and stopping lateral and vertical escapes between workloads and the container host.

The synergy of the Bedrock-VNC partnership enables a unique prevention mechanism that significantly increases overall trust and assurance for customers.

Bedrock Systems with their UltraVisor TM was the missing piece we have been waiting for to complete the platform’s security puzzle. Now customers can rely on top-notch security from the deepest possible layer – the Linux kernel – as well as the expected behavior of the VNClagoon suite and be assured that any anomaly will be detected and stopped immediately.

Bernd Rodler

Chairman of the Board, VNC AG

We’re pleased to partner with VNC to integrate BedRock next-generation run-time security with VNClagoon – a revolutionary cloud-based communication and collaboration platform – giving discerning customers assurance of data sovereignty and real-time security for their critical workloads.

Bob Tinker

CEO, BedRock Systems, Inc.

Zug, Switzerland, November 6, 2023 – VNC, a leading developer of open source-based enterprise applications, introduces VNCworkspace, a new fluid workplace module for team collaboration.

The new teamwork module VNCworkspace is part of the software stack VNClagoon and a functional extension of the dynamic dashboard module VNCfluid. With VNCworkspace, specific virtual workstations can be set up for temporary teams within VNCfluid. The persons belonging to the team (moderator, participants), their roles and rights as well as the function modules required for teamwork are simply dragged and dropped onto the dashboard and positioned there according to one’s own ideas. Potentially all modules of the collaboration and communication solution VNClagoon can be used, for example VNCcalendar, the project management tool VNCproject, the video conferencing system VNCtalk or the recently introduced CRM module VCNcrm. Of course, the central action wheel can also be used for cross-module application, file and document control.

With VNCworkspace, the organizational model of the respective team is mapped on the software side and a common, functionally optimized workspace is created in the shortest possible time, which facilitates teamwork, makes it more efficient and can be changed quickly if necessary. The workspace can be expanded at any time to include additional participants, functions and modules, and can also be archived for later documentation or reuse.

“To be successful, teams need to focus on the essentials. To do this, they need efficient and functionally flexible working tools,” says Andrea Wörrlein, Managing Director of VNC in Berlin and Member of the Board of VNC AG in Zug. “With VNCworkspace, they can quickly, easily and precisely adapt their application environment to their very specific requirements – and change it at any time if necessary”.

In VNCworkspace, team members, roles, rights and function modules can be freely selected
